Its time to celebrate our nations Independence Day again. In 1776 our Forefathers drafted a document that would forever change both their lives and the course of human history. This document is called The Declaration of Independence. It proclaimed the independence of the 13 British colonies in America, and was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. The declaration recounted the grievances of the colonies against the British crown and declared the colonies to be free and independent states.
It began:
It began:
“When in the Course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the Separation.”
Having established the legal criteria for, and declaring independence from the thrown of England, the document ends with a clear Declaration of Dependence upon Almighty God.
“We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights. . . . And for the support of this declaration, with a firm Reliance on the Protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”
Now, our precious country has strayed from its moorings as an independent land and a people with a clear and unapologetic Dependence upon God. Now we have a country that is becoming increasingly dependent upon others in the world and a people who are increasingly independent of and in rebellion against that same God upon whom our forefathers declared their dependence.
Perhaps our country will never return to the God who guided her fortunes. But you and I, nor any of our fellow citizens have to wait for the country to repent and return. The Bible says that each of us is born and exists with a heart and soul that is independent of God and in rebellion against Him. You do not have to wait, today can be your “Dependence Day”. The Lord says, “Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God and He will exalt you in due time”. You can make your personal Declaration of Dependence by putting your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ for all time and eternity.
When enough of our countrymen and women have left their personal independence and declared their dependence upon God, we will once again have a country that is dependent upon Almighty God and independent of outside forces. “The Nation whose God is the Lord shall be Blessed.”
